It’s a fact that in the face of greatest adversity, when people are sick and tired of being sick and tired, they find the determination and grit to reach deep down inside and pull from the very best of their character; to tap strengths that they didn’t know they had, to slowly climb, one step at a time, to soaring heights.
If you think you’re alone in facing adversity, think again. Every great person you will ever meet has had more than his or her fair share of challenges. And the only difference between that great person and you is in how they chose to meet those challenges. Odds are, they channeled the energy that they could have spent feeling angry, sad, misused, etc. into the impetus to effect great change! They turned stumbling blocks into stepping stones, and you can, too!
A great place to find inspiration and motivation is the library: biographies will buoy your spirits! Did you know that Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte were both epileptics? John Milton, author of Paradise Lost – was blind and impoverished. Abraham Lincoln had to borrow money to get to Washington, D.C. to give the Gettysburg Address. J.K. Rowling, world-renown author of the Harry Potter series, had her manuscript rejected by publishers before she received that an acceptance letter. These are only a handful of examples of men and women faced with adversity and in every instance they chose to continue despite (or perhaps in spite of) the obstacles in front of them.
There’s an old saying: “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” If you’re sitting around on your duff having a pity party, waiting for the winds of change to blow across your bow, you’re wasting your time. Life (and opportunity) will pass you by. Forward motion – one step taken in the direction of your dreams will be met by a wave of energy seemingly from out of nowhere, with the sole purpose of blowing wind into your sails, setting you speeding along on your journey.
When you find that you’ve been knocked back a step (because it only happens to people moving forward) celebrate! This is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for! Dust yourself off, push up your sleeves, and make another push in the direction of your dreams. Embrace adversity as a great teacher. Look for the lessons in your experience; take what you like, leave the rest, and set out on the next leg of your journey. Don’t settle for a life of mediocrity; know that the challenges that you face are the fires of wisdom tempering your desire into the finest steel. Pain is inevitable – misery is optional. Embrace your future and commit yourself to excellence; it is your birthright!
