What You NEED To Hear Vs. What You WANT To Hear

Over the weekend, I was the beneficiary of some sound counsel.  Notice I say “beneficiary” – bene – good – benefit, benificent – I was blessed by this coaching.

And the coaching was prefaced by “I’m not going to tell you what you WANT to hear, I’m going to tell you what you NEED to hear.”

That’s profound.

Because how many times do we hear what we want to hear, not what we need to hear?  And how many times do we tell someone what they want to hear, not what they need to hear?

So, I’m going to offer you some sound counsel:  Pay careful attention to the folks in this (or any industry) who share their stories with you.  Make sure that you’re hearing what you NEED to hear, not what you WANT to hear.

Having said that – I’m going to share with you a couple of things that I think you NEED to hear.

1st.  THIS is what it takes to be successful in anything:   A dream and a rock-solid commitment to that dream.

Every story you hear  – whether in person, or on any call or any recording or any webinar or any hangout or at any live event – EVERY story that you hear – no matter how easy-breezy-rags-to-riches it sounds…Every story started with a dream and a rock solid commitment to that dream.

Because here’s what I can tell you:  If you don’t have a dream – a rock solid WHY that you are totally committed to – you’ll let little things, any thing – stop you.

There will always be something more important to you than reaching that goal.  The dog got sick.  It’s raining outside.  It’s too sunny outside.  You have a hang nail.  You’re tired.  It’s hard.  There will always be something.

And it takes a commitment to build a dream – because there are going to be rough days, there are going to be times of doubt and frustration, there are going to be days that you just don’t FEEL like it – days when you don’t want to HAVE to do it.

But when you are committed to your dream, really committed – you pull from a place of want:  I am doing this because I WANT to do it, because I WANT to stay home with my kids, because I WANT to retire my husband, because I WANT to help others out of poverty and hardship…because I WANT to.

Not because I HAVE to.

For me, if I HAVE to do something, eventually I’ll resent it.  Life is busy.  Sometimes life is hard.  Building a business, working towards a dream – sometimes the going gets tough – and I don’t want to feel like I HAVE to do something – that feels EXTERNAL to me.  But if I WANT to do it – because I WANT the results that will come from doing the work, then I’ll do the work.

Finally, as you listen to success stories, remember this:  If ANYONE can do it, YOU can do it.  And EVERYONE you’ll ever hear about had to push through to the other side.

We were ALL beginners once.

We ALL wondered if it really worked, if we could really do it.  And we all wondered – as we got started and took baby steps, and as we realized that there was more to learn – mostly about ourselves – than we thought – we all asked: CAN I do this?

I’m here to tell you, “YES, you CAN.”  But you’ve gotta keep on going.  You can’t stop.

Building A Business Is Like Pushing A Boulder Up A Hill

Building a business – any business – working towards ANY dream or goal, is a lot like rolling a boulder up a hill.  It takes a lot of effort to get that boulder moving – you’ve gotta really put your shoulder into it and dig your feet in and push.

Once you get it rolling, you’ve got to keep pushing that boulder up that hill – keep pushing, keep pushing – because if you slow your pace or you stop, gravity is going to start to pull that boulder right back down that hill – and that boulder will roll right over you on its way back to ground zero.

Don’t slow down.  Don’t stop pushing.

Because when you KEEP on pushing, when you keep on ROLLING, when you keep your shoulder tight against that stone and you dig in and MOVE that boulder…

Eventually, you’re going to get to the top of that hill…eventually, that boulder is going to get easier to push.

But don’t stop there – keep on pushing!  Keep on rolling…you’re not there yet!

Once you roll that boulder over the crest of the hill and it starts back down over the other side – NOW is when it gets interesting!

Now it gets easier and easier, now your boulder starts to roll on it’s own.  Now your boulder starts to barrel down the hill and now you’ve got to pick up your pace to keep up with it – and now your boulder is rolling faster than you are and you’re jogging to keep up, and now you’re running to keep up – and now YOU’RE barreling along, doing your best to keep up with your boulder….

And that’s how it is when you’re building a business and reaching for a dream.

So – listen well:  You’re going to hear from folks who already pushed their boulder up the hill and over the crest.  They’re going to tell you about the other side of that hill.  Here’s the thing, though:  the “chasing the boulder” part sounds fun and glamorous (and it IS!) but that’s not where the story started.  It started with a single person with a big dream and a rock solid commitment.

It started with a shoulder to the boulder and a great heave.
